Mónica Heller (b. 1975, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an artist known for her work in 2D and 3D animation, created using amateur techniques and CGI sourced from open-access libraries. Her self-taught approach to digital technology, combined with a handcrafted sensibility, defines her DIY artistic ethic and distinguishes her within the Argentine art scene. In both her animations and paintings, Heller invites viewers to step away from rational logic and enter surreal, absurd worlds where dark humor coexists with nonsense and unease. Heller’s practice primarily focuses on the creation of animated videos featuring characters engaged in monologues or dialogues that explore human conditions and concerns. The themes she addresses draw from multiple sources, including personal experience, broad informational contexts, media narratives and events shaped by political and historical decisions that define the paradigms of our time. A graduate of the National University of the Arts (UNA), she also participated in the inaugural edition of the Artists’ Program at Torcuato Di Tella University. She has reprepresented Argentina at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Arsenale. Her career has been recognized with numerous awards and grants from institutions such as the MMSN Foundation, the Fortabat Foundation and the National Funds for the Arts, among others. Her work has been exhibited across Argentina and internationally in cities such as Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, London, Munich, Madrid, Beijing, Basel, Los Angeles, New York, Zurich, and Paris, among others. Heller participated in the group exhibition NAT GEO, curated by Violeta Mansilla, as part of the 2024 Various Others spring edition, organized by Salta art, in collaboration with Sorry Press.
