Munich based artist Vincent Scheers has been selected for Salta’s 2024 residency at Pivô in São Paulo, Brazil!

The artist will head to São Paulo, Brazil on August 7 until November 6 for a stay at Pivô, a downtown nonprofit art space in a building designed by Oscar Niemeyer.

In his artistic practice, Vincent Scheers (Belgium, 1990) challenges conventional preservation and restoration techniques, favoring more innovative approaches to dealing with physical heritage. He explores the essence of objects on a chemical level, utilizing thechniques like dissolution, exposure to bacteria, and pressure for transformation. Scheers also delves into the functioning of oppressive systems and infuses humor and linguistic manipulation into his work to shed light on alternative viewpoints. Animals hold a prominent place in his art, representing humanity’s connection to the environment and internalized societal insecurities. Through his art, Scheers challenges and criticizes societal categorizations and promotes liberation from constraining norms. His exhibitions include solo shows in Brussels, Antwerp Munich and more.

Pivô is a non-profit art space that acts as a platform for cultural exchange, critical thinking and artistic experimentation from its location in downtown São Paulo. The residency program of Pivô, Pivô Research is divided into three cycles per year, each lasting 12 weeks and receiving up to nine artists per cycle. For each cycle, a selection of guest curators are invited to support the group and work in collaboration with Pivô’s curatorial team. In addition to the curatorial support, Pivô provides a program of events, workshops and activities for its participants, announced at the beginning of each cycle.

Scheer’s selection was made by Salta art’s committee members, Gloria Hasnay (interim director, Kunstverein München), Kiki Mazzucchelli (artistic director, Luisa Strina) and José Roca (artistic director, 23rd Biennale of Sydney, director, FLORA ars+natura) in conversation with representatives from Pivô.
