Santiago de Chile-based curator and independent researcher Mariairis Flores Leiva (Marchigüe, Chile, 1990) has been selected for a curatorial residency at Ebenböckhaus in Munich, which is part of Salta art’s program 2024. The residency is launched in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich.
In her curatorial practice, characterized by a feminist perspective, Flores Leiva addresses issues like colonialism and heteronormativity, focusing on the embodied experience and critical engagement with the public sphere. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in Art Theory and History from Universidad de Chile, is currently co-curating Espacio218 and has served as a curatorial assistant for “Lotty Rosenfeld: Entrecruces de la memoria (1979-2020).” A collaborator with Artforum and Artishock, she is developing “Bajo el signo mujer,” a research project on Chilean women artists from 1973-1991, which will culminate in a book. Leiva Flores directed BECH Gallery (2017-2019) and co-edited “Mujeres en las artes visuales en Chile 2010-2020” with MNBA Director Varinia Brodsky. She authored “Desbordar el territorio” (2016) with artist Seba Calfuqueo and has contributed to various research projects, including “Chilean documents from s.XX-XXI.”
The residency program of the City of Munich in Villa Waldberta and Ebenböckhaus, offers international guests a temporary home. During their stay, artists, curators and academics from all over the world have the time, space and financial support to network with the local cultural scene and present their work to the public. The common areas in the Ebenböckhaus – foyer and park – are used by different actors of the art and cultural scene in the Pasing district. For the guest artists of the residency programme, exhibition spaces are also available in the flat itself.
Flores Leiva was nominated by curator Raphael Fonseca and selected by Salta art’s committee members, Gloria Hasnay (interim director, Kunstverein München), José Roca (artistic director, 23rd Biennale of Sydney, director, FLORA ars+natura) and curator Kiki Mazzucchelli and a representative from the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich.
